Sayso Installation Requirements and Compatibility Across Platforms
Sayso provides platform-specific installation options for macOS, Windows, and Linux, with detailed system requirements and supported distributions for each.
Platform-Specific Installation and Compatibility
Sayso offers platform-specific installation options for macOS, Windows, and Linux. On macOS, it requires version 14 or later with Apple Silicon and can be installed via brew install --cask watzon/tap/sayso. For Windows, it supports version 10 (1809 or later) and 11 on 64-bit Intel or AMD processors. On Linux, it works on Debian 12 or later, Ubuntu 22.04 or later, and other distributions with glibc 2.35 or later. Linux users can install via Flatpak, AUR, or Nix flake, depending on their system. Linux compatibility includes X11 and Wayland, though it works by app only and not on GNOME or KDE with Wayland. Installation files are named sayso--linux-, with being x86_64 or aarch64. API keys are stored in the Keychain (macOS), Windows Credential Manager, or Linux Secret Service keyring under dev.sayso.Sayso.
Verification and Security of Downloads
Verification and security of Sayso downloads are emphasized through cryptographic hash checks and secure storage of API keys. For macOS users, the shasum command can be used to verify the integrity of the .dmg file by comparing it with the provided .sha256 file. On Windows, users can use the Get-FileHash PowerShell command to confirm the hash of the .exe installer. If the installer is not signed, Windows SmartScreen will prompt the user before execution. API keys are stored securely in the macOS Keychain, Windows Credential Manager, or Linux Secret Service keyring, ensuring they are not exposed in plain text. Sayso is funded by voluntary contributions from users, with the download page at justsayso.app allowing users to specify a payment amount, including $0. However, if Sayso is obtained from GitHub—via a release file, Nix flake, or source build—no payment prompt is shown. For building from source, users can run git clone https://github.com/watzon/sayso.git and use SAYSO_SIGN_IDENTITY=- scripts/bundle.sh to create an ad hoc signature without requiring an Apple developer account.
Development and Build Requirements
The development and build requirements for Sayso involve several key components. On Windows, users must install the Visual Studio 2022 Build Tools with the 'Desktop development with C++' workload and a Windows SDK, along with CMake, LLVM (for libclang), and Rust 1.98.1. The LIBCLANG_PATH environment variable should be set if LLVM is not on the system PATH. To build the Windows executable, the command powershell -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File scripts\bundle-windows.ps1 can be used, which generates build\windows\Sayso\Sayso.exe. Adding the -Installer flag also creates an installer in the dist\ directory.
For Linux, the scripts/linux-deps.sh script installs required packages (Debian and Ubuntu names) and Rust 1.98.1. The scripts/bundle-linux.sh script then generates a tarball at build/sayso--linux-.tar.gz. To create .deb, .rpm, AppImage, and Flatpak packages from the tarball, run scripts/package-linux.sh build/sayso--linux-.tar.gz. API keys are stored in the Keychain (macOS), Windows Credential Manager, or Linux Secret Service keyring under dev.sayso.Sayso.
