Introducing Deno Sandbox

Overview of Deno Sandbox

Deno Sandbox is a new offering from Deno that provides a secure environment for executing untrusted code, particularly useful in scenarios where code is generated by large language models (LLMs) or user-submitted scripts. The system leverages lightweight Linux microVMs running in the Deno Deploy cloud, ensuring isolation and security. This approach is designed to address the growing need for platforms that can safely execute code without exposing sensitive credentials or allowing unauthorized network access.

Security Features

Deno Sandbox introduces several security mechanisms to protect against potential threats. One of the key features is the prevention of secret exfiltration. Secrets such as API keys are not directly accessible within the sandbox environment. Instead, they are replaced with placeholders that only materialize when the sandbox makes an outbound request to an approved host. This ensures that even if malicious code attempts to steal credentials, it only encounters a placeholder, not the actual secret.

Additionally, network egress control is implemented through an outbound proxy, allowing administrators to restrict which hosts the sandbox can communicate with. This provides a chokepoint for policy enforcement, ensuring that only approved network traffic is allowed. These features are inspired by similar implementations in tools like coder/httpjail, and they contribute to a defense-in-depth strategy.

Deployment and Integration

Deno Sandbox integrates seamlessly with Deno Deploy, allowing developers to deploy code directly from the sandbox to production without the need for rebuilding or re-authenticating. This streamlined process reduces the overhead typically associated with moving code from development to production environments. The deployment process is initiated through a simple API call, making it easy to transition from a sandboxed environment to a fully scalable serverless deployment.

Use Cases and Technical Specifications

Deno Sandbox is particularly well-suited for use cases such as AI agents executing code, secure plugin systems, and ephemeral CI runners. The technical specifications highlight the performance and scalability of the system, with options for varying vCPU and memory configurations, as well as support for persistent storage through volumes and snapshots. Sandboxes are ephemeral by default, but they can be extended on demand, with a maximum lifetime of 30 minutes.

The system is available in regions such as Amsterdam and Chicago, with pricing based on compute time and memory usage. This makes it a cost-effective solution for developers who need to run untrusted code securely and efficiently.
