Elastic Security and OpenAI GPT Cyber models: What frontier cyber defense means for the public sector

Integration of OpenAI GPT Cyber Models into Elastic Security

Elastic has joined the OpenAI Daybreak Defense Network and announced plans to integrate OpenAI GPT Cyber models directly into Elastic Security. This integration is delivered through Elastic Inference Service (EIS), a managed, GPU-accelerated inference layer. This allows security analysts to leverage specialized cyber reasoning within existing workflows, eliminating the need for separate model infrastructure.

Public Sector Implications and Strategic Context

The public sector, including government, defense, and education organizations, faces significant challenges in cybersecurity, such as an overwhelming number of alerts and a shortage of analysts. Recent AI-assisted attacks on US water utilities highlight the vulnerability of critical infrastructure to AI-enabled threats. OpenAI’s Daybreak initiative, supported by a $1 billion investment for Frontline Defenders, aims to provide public agencies and essential-service operators with subsidized access to advanced AI models.

The integration of OpenAI GPT Cyber models into Elastic Security aligns with the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Memorandum M-26-14, which encourages agencies to adopt flexible security log storage and AI-driven threat detection. Similarly, CISA’s CI Fortify initiative emphasizes the need for visibility across both enterprise and operational environments. Elastic Security’s integration with Daybreak models offers resource-constrained agencies access to frontier-class reasoning without requiring new AI infrastructure or additional staff.

Architecture and Flexibility of Elastic Security

Elastic Security is built on a mission to provide visibility, speed, and context for threat detection and response on a single open platform. The Daybreak integration extends existing capabilities such as Unified SIEM, endpoint, and cloud security on one data platform, Search AI Lake for long-term retention, and Elastic AI Assistant for triage and investigation at scale.

Elastic Security’s model-agnostic architecture allows agencies to connect their own government-managed AI, whether it is an authorized OpenAI deployment, a classified or air-gapped instance, or any other model the agency has already approved. This flexibility ensures that the same Attack Discovery, AI Assistant, and agentic workflows can operate across different models, with human analysts maintaining control over every action.

Broader Cybersecurity Context and Considerations

As the defender’s window continues to narrow, the integration of Elastic Security with OpenAI GPT Cyber models can help the public sector close the gap in AI-enabled cyber defense. However, the release and timing of any features or functionality remain at Elastic’s sole discretion, and not all features may be delivered as described.

Users should also be cautious when using AI tools with personal, sensitive, or confidential information, as there is no guarantee that such information will be kept secure or confidential. Users are advised to familiarize themselves with the privacy practices and terms of use of any generative AI tools prior to use.
