## Improved Conflict Resolution with git add --resolved

Git 2.56 introduces a new mode for the `git add` command, `--resolved`, which is specifically designed to handle merge conflicts more safely. This mode ensures that only paths with unresolved conflicts are staged, preventing accidental staging of unrelated changes or files that still contain conflict markers. This is particularly useful in scenarios where a merge may begin with unrelated local changes already present, as it provides a safety rail for maintainer workflows.

## Faster Merge Base Detection

Git 2.56 optimizes the process of finding merge bases by tracking how many queued commits remain painted exclusively by each side during the traversal. Once one side is exhausted, Git can stop processing further commits, significantly reducing the time required to find all merge bases. This optimization has been shown to improve performance dramatically in large monorepos, with some cases reporting up to 70 times faster execution.

## Path-Walk Repacking for Smaller Storage

Git 2.56 makes path-walk repacking more practical for repository hosts by removing compatibility issues with reachability bitmaps and delta islands. Path-walk repacking groups similar objects by their location in the tree, leading to better delta relationships and significant storage savings. In one benchmark, path-walk repacking reduced the size of a pack from 558.5 MB to 164.4 MB, a 71% reduction.

## Other Notable Features

Git 2.56 also includes several other improvements, such as the `git history drop` command, which allows developers to remove a commit and replay its descendants onto the commit’s parent. Additionally, the `git refs` command has been consolidated to provide a unified interface for managing references. Other changes include bulk deletion of merged branches, a new `--reset-when-found` option for `git bisect run`, and support for flattening merge topology with `git replay --linearize`.

These updates reflect Git’s ongoing commitment to improving performance, usability, and storage efficiency, making it a more robust tool for developers and repository hosts alike.
